I couldn’t have more wonderful things to say about Sam and the team at Sage.

My wife and I had the best experience with Sam, not just for my prenatal care, but she also was there from conception to birth! She completed our IUI procedure for us.

Being a queer couple, we had visited a few fertility clinics in the area when we were ready to start the process of getting pregnant! These clinics were not only dismissive of us in general, but most were incredibly expensive and over medicalized for what we needed. We didn’t have any known fertility issues, but the industry is mostly geared towards infertile straight couples. I was going to be required to undergo expensive tests and take meds to do an IUI cycle unnecessarily.

I had thought I wanted to do a home birth and heard that midwives could do IUI, so I started to look for midwives in the area. Once I found Sam and Sage, it was clear she was perfect for the first part of our journey. Sam was INCREDIBLE with supporting a more natural and less medical conception journey and had a strong history with Fairfax Cryobank. She helped us navigate the complicated process with our known donor (navigating the donor process is not for the faint of heart 😅). Not only was she significantly less expensive than the clinics, but I was able to simply track my cycle under her expertise and was able to get pregnant on only the second try!

We then signed on for prenatal and home birth care with Sam for my pregnancy. Sam and her whole team used evidence-based and trauma informed care throughout the entire pregnancy. They supported me with evidence-based, unbiased information about risks and benefits of every procedure, test, and step of the pregnancy and listened to my decisions without judgment. I couldn’t be more thankful for the personal, kind, and knowledgeable way that the Sage team supported me through my pregnancy.

Then, when i woke up one morning at almost 41 weeks with high blood pressure and ended up with pre-eclampsia and in the hospital needing to be induced, Sam was there the entire time. She was an advocate, support, and rock for both me and my wife, and we couldn’t have done the birth without her. She-integrated seamlessly into our care team there and made sure I understood everything that was happening and advocated for me to have a birth that felt right to me, even if it wasn’t the home birth I had planned. I felt safe, even in the hospital, knowing that Sam had my back. I managed to have an incredible birth at the hospital anyway.

Even after birth, the Sage team is still there for me - the aftercare and support that I’ve received for both me and my baby has been wonderful and has helped to ease my anxiety. I have somewhere to go for all of my questions and concerns. They show up to my house for visits the first few weeks and continue care for 6-8 weeks after delivery.

I could write more about all of the support and help that Sage gave throughout our pregnancy, but I think this review is sufficiently long 😆. I’ll finally say - Thank you, Sam, Jackie, and Corrine for everything you have done for us. I’m so lucky to call you all friends! And to anyone considering working with them, they are an absolutely incredible team and are well worth it for conception, prenatal, birth, and post-partum support.

Sam and Corinne were incredibly smart, professional, wise and compassionate. Prenatal visits and postpartum visits were extremely valuable and a stark contrast to the 2 minute appointments we were used to from OBs. They took a very holistic approach to my wife and our son's health and it felt like issues and complications were avoided by proper foresight and early intervention. During my first son's birth inactive labor was slow and then active labor was so fast our midwife missed it. This time my wife's water broke before contractions, and that morning Sam and Corinne showed up. They stayed with us the entire day, (>12 hours) continuing to check on the health of my wife and our son. Active labor went smoothly and without complications. We are eternally grateful to Sam and Corinne who feel like family now.

I transferred care to Sage Midwifery late in my first pregnancy, and it remains one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Choosing Sam Sewell at Sage Midwifery to guide me through my pregnancy was, without a doubt, the best decision I made as a first-time mom. From the very beginning, Sam offered not only her deep expertise and professionalism, but also genuine care and compassion that made all the difference in my journey to motherhood.

What stood out most was how completely seen and supported I felt—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Sam was always attuned to how I was doing on every level. Update #2!

Had my third baby at home with Sam! Due to my previous labor/birth being rapid, Sam adjusted accordingly and arrived 30 minutes before I delivered… when I needed her the most. She acted as a doula, putting pressure on my hips and suggesting different positions to be in, leading up to the final stage of delivery and my biggest supporter, cheerleader, and guide during pushing stage. She reminded me my body was meant for this and reassured me I had full control and power over this tough and beautiful moment. I’m just so grateful for Sam and her team for yet another happy, healthy, and safe home birth. The DMV is truly so lucky to have this gem of a human being who cares so much for her Sage mamas and babies. We love you, Sam! Maybe see you again 🙃

Had my second baby at home with Sam and it was, again, a wonderful, safe, and happy birth experience! My second labor was fast (a little faster than we expected), but Sam was able to judge the situation just over the phone and ended up getting to us just in time! We were lucky enough to have two additional midwives in training, who were also amazing! Sam’s ability to do her thing AND train is so impressive. You can tell she loves what she does by how much she wants to share her wisdom with the midwives in training. Sam is simply a blessing to my family and I, and we are looking forward to working with her again 🙂

I reached out to Sam and Roni when I was 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I felt more love and care after one visit with them than I did during the 20 weeks of going to my doctors, so I knew almost immediately I was making the right decision for my birth journey.

From day one, Sam and Roni were the ultimate hype women. They gave me the mental strength and confidence I needed to not only get me through my pregnancy and birth, but to actually enjoy it. While working with them, I learned so much about my body and inner strength that I think many women forget they have when they need it most. I believe this knowledge and mentality played a huge role in my safe and successful home birth as a first time mom.

I also believe Roni's classes helped me through the process tremendously! Roni has a passion for teaching and you can totally tell it is her bliss. I NEVER thought I was going to take pregnancy related classes... I ended up taking three of Roni's classes. They were good for me and even better for my husband. The labor preparation classes were eye opening and a must for us looking back on it. My husband really took in everything Roni taught us - he knew what phase of labor I was in, when to call them, where to massage me that would be most beneficial, reminded me to relax my jaw, and was consistently guiding me to a good and healthy mental space. My husband was able to do this because of Roni and what she taught us. Anyone can be knowledgeable, but few can teach. Roni can teach.

Pregnancy and birth are hard. You need your village. You need your team. You want Sam and Roni in your corner.

Sam is absolutely amazing in every way! She is extremely knowledgeable, supportive, encouraging, patient, understanding, thorough, kind, experienced, and trustworthy. She is everything you would ever want in a midwife. I had an amazing homebirth that was everything I hoped it would be. Sam empowered me to be confident in my desires and I felt safe knowing I could trust her fully to step in if needed. All visits prior to the birth were thorough and I always felt listened to and that any concerns I had were fully addressed. Her passion shines through and she truly cares about you as a person. LaTasha and Emma were her birth assistants and I can say all the same things about them. They were simply amazing during each visit and during the birth. Sam, LaTasha, and Emma are all truly one of a kind. Since the birth I have had several questions for Sam and she always responds quickly and helps me with anything I ever need. She has become a true friend and support for me beyond just being an amazing midwife. I recommend Sam and Sage Midwifery to anyone seeking an empowered, safe, and supported birth experience. I wish I wanted 10 more kids just to do this over and over again. You will not be disappointed choosing her as your midwife!
